Research lines

Development, Sustainability and Innovation

The projects developed in this line of research aim to propose technological alternatives and innovative solutions focused on the optimization of projects, as well as the development of processes and / or products committed to regional sustainability, cleaner production, social inclusion, generation of work and income in conditions of minimum environmental impact. In this line are inserted the following thematic areas of action / interest of the researchers of the PPEA:

Energy Conservation and Renewable Energies

In this thematic area the main purpose is to develop techniques of efficient use and conservation of energy applicable to the various regional economic activities, which can additionally be transferred to other locations. The aim is also to study the possibilities of using regionally adequate renewable energy sources, focusing on the use of wind and solar energy, rural, urban and industrial waste, also considering the ways of obtaining and the possibilities of using biofuels as well as the possible impacts related to the operation of companies and generating units installed in the region.

Environmental Management of Cities, Waste and Effluent Management

The objective of this thematic area is to carry out studies and research that may help the development of environmental management instruments for urban spaces and areas where nature has been transformed into a new nature built by man. The work associated with the proposal of systems for the integrated management and final disposal of urban and industrial waste and effluents and the proposal of local strategies for urban development in the Northern Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, with emphasis on the analysis of the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of the activities of the oil and gas production chain. The mitigation of the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of other large projects that induce accelerated urbanization or licensing in the region, including regional port terminals and the Açu Port and Logistics Complex, is also under consideration.

Environmental Technologies and Industrial Innovation

One of the most challenging issues for present and future generations is to try to reverse the environmental degradation caused by unsustainable use of natural resources. In this thematic area, we seek to study alternatives for the mitigation of pressures and environmental impacts related to products and services resulting from anthropogenic action in the physical-natural environment, with emphasis on waste management and final destination, and the development of eco materials-efficient, in the aggregation of value to materials underutilized by the industrial activities, as well as in the optimization of existing industrial processes through the introduction of innovative practices.
